It was on the agenda so we are not surprised, but we are worried about this continued lack of public input. In an ongoing saga of lies and manipulations, with backroom deals and private meetings and emails breaching the public trust, our Housing Element is still not certified. Our City is vulnerable and ineligible for grant funds because of the Council majority of Fisch, Lee, and McMorrin. And here they go again. This time they gave themselves a loophole in the form of John Nachbar, City Manager.
During the August 8, 2022 City Council meeting, the Council majority approved to submit our still-flawed Housing Element again up to the State for review. The document has been rejected multiple times and it has not significantly improved since then. Furthermore, Fisch, Lee, and McMorrin are STILL trying to eliminate R-1 single family zones. Their arguments have been proven false. They know that affordable housing is just an ideological shield and that it is not possible by upzoning the city.
But what did they do THIS TIME? They weaponized John Nachbar, the City Manager. He gets the final word to make changes to the Housing Element “to obtain certification” from the State Housing Department (HCD).
Why is this an issue? Well, once again, we see a strategy to BYPASS the public. No discussion publicly, just the City Manager can make changes all by himself. One employee of the public should not have this much power over the public itself. Fisch, Lee, and McMorrin have turned John Nachbar into a political weapon. The City Council is his boss. They can remove him from his job. And with his salary and benefits, he may not have the incentive to do anything but what the majority dictates.
Money talks and this is a lot of money:
