It’s really quite astounding that UC Berkeley Professor Daniel Kammen, who lives in a 3000+ square foot home in Oakland, CA, on the street in the photo below, would dare to write a letter (on official University letterhead to ‘lend credibility’) declaring that we in Culver City must get rid of our single family neighborhoods. What nerve! He and his family can enjoy ample parking, giant homes, room to spread out, but we must do our part to “minimize per-capita emissions, address housing inequities, and strive for social and climate justice.” Ivory tower, anyone?
Furthermore, the professor’s attempt to amplify the June 2021 Culver City staff report was also shortsighted. The staff report made an allegation that multifamily housing would reduce carbon emissions, however that was based completely on software-generated data and had no information actually collected from Culver City. The report clearly shows UrbanFootprint’s name all over it as the source of the computer simulated data. The hopefully more accurate environmental impact report has not yet been published.
