She wants to sue Culver City. In fact, she is. And she makes it her habit to sue lots of cities. Why? Her organization, YIMBY Law, is a non-profit that takes big corporate donations, focuses on destroying single family homes, and then sues the suburbs to make it happen. That’s their motto: “Sue the Suburbs”.
Sonja Trauss is the Executive Director of YIMBY Law. Remember, YIMBY means Yes In My Back Yard, and is focused on eliminating all the conditions that allow for a family to have a yard of their own. For example, Culver City has R-1 single family zoning, but Sonja Trauss says that needs to go. Or when Culver City reduced the floor area ratio (FAR) to help prevent mega-mansions crowding up the neighborhood, then along came Sonja Trauss and said nope. We are being bullied by YIMBY Law because they want to increase multifamily buildings.
If you go to any housing meeting, you will see Sonja Trauss or representatives from YIMBY Law or their subsidiaries, such as Abundant Housing Los Angeles and Culver City For More Homes. We have Nancy Barba here in Culver City who works both for the Culver City Planning Commission and the anti-R1 group, Culver City For More Homes. That’s right — Nancy Barba is a political operative who is an elected local official. That is unacceptable.
Below please read Sonja Trauss’ email and legal letter demanding that Culver City upzone (in other words, get rid of single family homes).
