Councilmember McMorrin is misquoting and taking comments out of context.
The “CM” is Councilmember Eriksson, who did not call for “increased stop and frisk”. You can investigate the public record and hear it for yourself.
At the end of the June 13, 2022 City Council meeting, Councilmember Fisch asked to add an agenda item about gun safety for a future meeting. Councilmember Eriksson added comments that were focused on what our City Council can actually do right now to help keep people safe.
Eriksson asked that we invite the Culver City Police Department back for a discussion about the updated “Traffic Directive”, which has resulted in confiscating fewer guns from traffic stops. Mayor Lee agreed that the discussion should happen with an update on policies and wanted to add it as a separate agenda item.
After some discussion of other future agenda items, Councilmember McMorrin came back around to Eriksson’s suggestion. She wanted to distinguish it from the recent community march about guns on school campuses, and this led to Fisch introducing the phrase “stop and frisk”, which has historical problems as an approach throughout the country. However, Eriksson was discussing the actual impact of our local “Traffic Directive” updated in February 2021. Since that time, fewer guns have been removed from routine police work here in Culver City.
Below you can view the Culver City Police Department statistics from the first quarter of 2022 for traffic stop detentions and draw your own conclusions.
We all want to keep the schools and streets safe, so what is the benefit of politicizing the ideas and suggestions from Councilmember Eriksson? Furthermore, what is the benefit of taking his comments out of context and posting them to Twitter? Councilmember McMorrin did just that, and misquoted him as well. Perhaps she wants to paint Councilmember Eriksson in a negative light, and that is unfortunate — especially since he is working to accelerate progress toward a safer Culver City.
